Institute Strikes Clauses (Cargo)
Buys back strikes, riots, civil commotion, terrorism and political motive.
Definition
The companion wording to the war clauses, reference CL386 and dated 1 January 2009. It covers loss caused by strikers, locked-out workmen, persons taking part in labour disturbances, riots or civil commotions, and by any act of terrorism or any person acting from a political, ideological or religious motive. It does not cover the economic consequences of a strike — only physical loss or damage caused by one.
Why it decides money
Cargo stranded by a port strike is not a strikes claim. Cargo damaged by people on a picket line is. The distinction is physical loss, and it disappoints people every time there is industrial action at a major hub.
